Megan,

The work NGO's do is under valued by some National Governments and the good these NGO's do for people with little or no material wealth is unquantifiable. Lets hope that this Government follow through with actions and promises that are given to the delegates attending this conference.

The future is in our hands and the world community needs to support good work done everywhere by people with a good values and more commitment than most.

Regards

Hi Sophie and all

Charlie has been better than me at watching your blog but I don't think that he has sent any messages and neither have I so here I go. Reading about the KKH reminded me of many journeys that I have undertaken with a certain amount of trepidation and some stomach turning when I think back on them but I am sure that I have never seen such an awesome and magnificent road as that which you have been travelling - gosh. Part of me is hideously envious the other half thinks of snow and Piaggios and goes and grills another muffin and makes another cup of tea!

I have a bad memory but are Sharon and John coming your way round the Christmas time. I do hope that, if so, you will all have a truly lovely time together. Anyway, keep well and safe .Jinny

A letter from a small Island (Blighty) Part 1

(Sophie) To keep you in touch with events in Britain.

Two weeks ago was the Labour Party conference in Manchester. It was believed at one stage that this could have been good old Gordon’s last conference as leader of the Labour party. David Milliband (Foreign Sectary and potential Leader in waiting) appears to have had decided against an immediate challenge. A bit of an uneventful conference in reality! Gordon Brown left as a stronger Leader after the conference. Ruth Kelly (Transport Secretary) indicated that she wanted to spend more time with her family!

Last week was the Conservative Party conference in Birmingham. The week was going to be a big hitting exercise against Labour! George Osborne (shadow Chancellor) gave a very average presentation and this may be due to the stock market going ballistic! The tone and style of the conference appears to have changed as the serious nature of some financial institutions both in America and Europe escalated. Today Iceland (The Country – not the chain) is on the fringe of going bust! Some Icelandic financial institutions have stopped transactions period! David Cameron talked a lot but didn’t say any thing! (58 minutes of sound bites and no concrete policy’s unveiled!) He looked pretty ineffective and appears to be supporting the Government with the current financial situation. George Osborne popped along to No 10 to help out!

The storm appears to be escalating and stability and confidence needs to be restored to enable the markets to return to some sort of normality! However, the impact on UK Plc could lead to recession! All parts of the economy are affected and cars sales are significantly down, this will have a big impact on the wider economy! All UK banks are on the edge of Nationalisation! (Some banks lost nearly 40% of their share value today 7th Oct 08)

What about the weather? It’s been tipping it down for Days…………….
Part 2 will hopefully be a bit more upbeat! Maybe this was just a nightmare!

Amelia, Your account of your visit to the Sisters of charity reminds me of my visit to a Romanian orphanage I did a few years ago. The people that work in these charities are so dedicated and outward looking and you are right to say "It's a humbling experience".

We in the wealthy West live in a very artificial environment and our measure of success appears to be acquiring material objects over time, this is fueled by the media and marketing groups. I sometimes think we may have progressed as a society but haven't advanced in reality!

It's so refreshing to read your account and it illustrates how fortunate we are but sometimes we forget this! Sophie did an interesting talk on the history of tea in Salisbury the week before she left for India. (Tea at the top- Catherine Street)

Hope your travels continue to interesting, exciting and educational.

Kind regards.

Sophie,

Many thanks for the informative talk you gave at the "Delightful Cafe" in Catherine Street in Salisbury on the history of tea! I've read the book "Green Gold" and consumed the "Jasmine tea"! (They go together)

Am sure your travels will be exciting and educational and you will meet many characters along the way. Are you going to do a follow up talk when you return? Am sure it would be well supported.

Anyway, better trot on. Safe travels!

Kind regards
Ian McAdams

PS: Lufthansa appear to have gone down hill since I flew to Nepal a few years ago!
