The Central Asian countries of Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan are located in the steppes between Russia and the Indian Sub-continent. The overland trading routes that run through this region are often called the ‘Silk Roads’.

Tracing Tea will be travelling through the Eastern European countries of Bulgaria, Serbia, Montenegro, Hungary and Slovakia. Ruled from Moscow until the fall of the USSR, these independent countries are among the newest members of the European Union.

 

 

 

Western Europe – Sailors and Traders

The countries of Western Europe discovered and opened up the maritime routes to the Far East and also west to the Americas in their bid for new territories and ever greater trade profits. Tracing Tea will visit Austria, the Czech Republic, Germany and Holland.

 

 

 

Great Britain – An Empire of Tea

Episode 8

 

A fifth of the world was once ruled from this small, damp island to the north of continental Europe. The makeup of Britain’s population reflects her heritage as an imperial power and she still retains some influence amongst former colonies, known as the Commonwealth.
